UNION FOR REFORM JUDAISM SOUTHEAST COUNCIL REGIONAL BIENNIAL

This is an exciting year for us here at Mickve Israel. Not only are we celebrating our 275th Anniversary and the anniversary of Judaism in the South, but we have been honored to be chosen to be the host congregation for the Union for Reform Judaism Southeast Council Regional Biennial, November 20-23, 2008.

Between 500 and 600 participants from throughout our Region will be coming to the Hyatt Hotel. The Southeast Region is the largest Region in the URJ and consists of about 100 congregations from Alabama, the Bahamas, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In April, many of you attended an initial planning meeting for the Biennial during which time Rabbi Linda Joseph, the Director of the Southeast Council, outlined for us the role of the Local Arrangements Committee. There is still time to become involved in this exciting event; just click here to take the first step.

William and Sarah Dedication

william and sarah

On Saturday, December 8, 2007 over 200 people celebrated the dedication of our museum-quality replica of the William and Sarah, the vessel that brought our founding members to America.  It was indeed a special occasion shared by members of Mickve Israel and the community.  Thank you again to Mel Gamzon for the wonderful gift of the ship.  A special thank you also to Margo Webb for the spectacular decorations in the Mordecai Sheftall Memorial Hall for the reception for this event.

Please visit our 275th anniversary page for additional photos.

Mickve Israel Besamin Box
 spice box

During our William and Sarah dedication event, we were presented with our very own silver Mickve Israel spice box.  The magnificent piece was created by Seth Carlson (a recent SCAD graduate) especially for our use.  Its design is based on our cupola.  In the future, replicas will be available for purchase in our gift shop so you can have an exclusive Mickve Israel spice box of your own.  (The original shall be on display in the museum while not in use by the congregation.)
