Shalom y'all and welcome to the website of the third oldest Jewish Congregation in America!
Congregation Mickve Israel is an active Reform synagogue in the heart of the Historic District of Savannah, Georgia. Our congregation was founded in 1733, just a few months after General James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia.
We are proud of our over 275 years of history in Savannah. Our historic sanctuary was designed by New York architect Henry G. Harrison and built in 1876 in pure neo-Gothic style, reflecting the fashionable architecture of the Victorian era. It is the only Gothic-style architecture synagogue in America. Our three story Sheftall Memorial Hall addition, opened in 2003, houses our world class museum, library, Judaica shop, religious school and temple offices, as well as our impressive banquet room and full professional kitchen.
Mickve Israel is a member of the Union for Reform Judaism. We are a welcoming congregation with our members being very active within the congregation and community.
We welcome anyone who wishes to worship with us, and visitors are invited to tour our historic sanctuary and museum.
If our site does not answer your queries significantly, please contact us.
Please be aware that we only have on-street parking at Mickve Israel. It will be necessary for you to pay to park at a City parking meter during business hours, but not after 5 pm or on the weekends. However, illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed.
We are the only neo-Gothic style synagogue in America. In our tradition of Southern Jewish hospitality, we annually welcome thousands of visitors from all over the world to Mickve Israel.
We offer tours of our historic sanctuary and museum, and hold worship services on Sabbath and Jewish holidays.
Mickve Israel is a member of the Union for Reform Judaism, and plays an important role within the Savannah community. In addition to religious services and holiday observances, we host events pertaining to other cultures, history, books and music, just to name a few.
We participate in Savannah's annual Super Museum Sunday during which historic homes and museums open their doors to the public. This free event, held in February, is a community favorite in which many members of the Coastal Museums Association participate.
Our sanctuary has hosted concerts for the Savannah Children's Choir and acted as a venue for several Savannah Music Festival concerts in addition to hosting private educational opportunities on historic organs.
For many years, Mickve Israel has been an active participant in the Historic Houses of Worship events. Together we celebrate our blessings through a community-wide ecumenical Thanksgiving Service. This interfaith service is held the Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving.
Throughout our history, we have also participated in any number of life cycle events.
You do not need to be a member of Mickve Israel to use our facility. Our sanctuary and/or social hall (the Mordecai Sheftall Memorial Hall) is available to rent based on availability. Our Administrative Director, Lauree L. Morris, can provide you with specifics.
